INTERACT study (all tumor types)

Intercultural communication in pediatric oncology.
Who can enter
  • Parents from migrant backgrounds
  • Pediatric oncologists/nurse specialists

Goal

The goal of this study is to better understand migration families experiences and needs with regard to the care they receive in our center. We also want to discuss with parents and healthcare providers how they experience communication in our center and whether they have any suggestions for improving it. This way, we hope to provide equitable care that fits each families’ personal need in the future.

Background

At the Princess Máxima Center, we believe it is important that care aligns as closely as possible with the wishes and needs of families. Previous conversations with healthcare providers and parents have shown that this is not always successfully achieved for families with a different language or cultural background. Therefore, the Princess Máxima Center has initiated this study.

In the first part of the study, interviews will be conducted with parents from migrant backgrounds and focus groups will be conducted with healthcare providers. In addition, questionnaires on cultural competence and current experiences with intercultural health communication will be assessed with healthcare providers preceding the focus group.

In the second part, parents, children, and healthcare providers will be asked for permission to make a video recording of one of their outpatient appointments. Then, parents and healthcare providers will be individually invited for a session in which they watch back and discuss elements of the video-recorded outpatient appointment.

In order to participate in a study please refer to your/your child’s doctor. For international patients: please feel welcome to contact our International Patients Office.
