German award for Hans Clevers

Hans Clevers received the Großes Verdienstkreuz mit Stern, a highly appreciated German award. He was rewarded for his merits in the area of stem cell biology.
On behalf of the Federal President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the German consul Petra Speyrer handed out the Cross of Merit with star from the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. She praised Clevers because of his extraordinary contribution to medical science, specifically to the use of organoids. 

The Order of Merits is the only, and therefore highest, order of the Federal Republic. Both German and foreign people are eligible for the award. The medal consist a red cross with a golden center on which a black eagle is portraited, the heraldic animal of Germany.

 Prof. dr. Clevers is scientific director and member of the Board of Directors of the Princess Máxima Center. In addition he is affiliated with the Hubrecht Institute (KNAW) and professor of Molecular Genetics at the University Medical Center Utrecht and Utrecht University.
