Martha Grootenhuis

Principal Investigator
I am specialized in research into the psychosocial consequences of childhood cancer. These include consequences such as medical traumatic stress, anxiety and depression, but also quality of life and sleep.

In order to offer targeted pediatric psycho-oncological care, there is an ongoing need for research into the risk and protective factors of the individual patient system and the family. As Pediatric Psycho-Oncology Professionals International (PoPPis) we focus on the early recognition and treatment of these psychosocial problems. We use web-based applications, such as the digital method KLIK to systematically monitor and screen for the development of the children and their parents and to pay attention to this in clinical practice (www.hetklikt.nu). Effectiveness research and implementation of interventions are part of our research program. I was affiliated with the Emma Children's Hospital of the AMC between 1992 and 2018 and I built a researchgroup on pediatric psychology. In 2011 they appointed me professor. Research carried out during this period can be found at www.zorgvoorhetziekekind.nl including several PhD-theses in pediatric psycho-oncology.

I am the founder and chairman of the Pediatric Psycho-Oncology Committee of the International Society of Pediatric Oncology (SIOP) and associate editor for Supportive Care & Cancer.
