Treatment

• Inpatient ward

  At the start of treatment, your child will be admitted to the Máxima Center. During treatment, your child may also need to stay in the hospital from time to time.
  Your child will have a private room connected to a room for the parent(s). These parent–child rooms have a balcony. We try to keep hospital stays as short as possible, as children recover faster at home than in the hospital.

• Outpatient clinic

  Your child will visit the outpatient clinic regularly for a consultation with the doctor or nurse practitioner. Before the consultation, we measure height, weight, blood pressure, heart rate, and temperature, and take a blood sample.

  Some procedures take place in the treatment room, such as:

  • connecting the central line (VIT)

  • drawing blood from the line

  • caring for the line

  • giving chemotherapy

  • inserting a feeding tube

  • giving injections, for example vaccinations or anticoagulants

  You will always know in advance what the visit is for, so you can prepare your child accordingly.

• Day care unit

  Your child will also visit the day care unit regularly. Here we give chemotherapy, blood transfusions, and other medications. It is a large, bright space with comfortable chairs and beds. Children can also play or do schoolwork there. There are private rooms available for children who need them.

  Minor procedures, such as bone marrow punctures and lumbar punctures, are performed in the treatment rooms of the day care unit. Your child will also come here for scans or MRIs under sedation.

  If your child needs to visit the day care unit for several days in a row, you can stay overnight at the Ronald McDonald House.

  You will always know beforehand what the visit is for, so you can prepare your child accordingly.
