A lot of the pediatric patients in the Máxima get hematopoietic cell transplants (HCT) as part of their treatment strategy. It’s not only limited to leukemias, but it is also needed in solid tumours when the treatment of cancer is so severe it damages the immune system. As a researcher I want to better understand what goes on during HCT on a single-cell level. In doing so, I get to develop and oversee experimental approaches that bring us closer to answering the key questions in our lab. Namely, how does a transplant lead to the reconstitution of the blood system on a single-cell level in pediatric patients? And why does HCT sometimes fail?
