Koen Weghorst is a Life Sciences student at the University of Applied Sciences Utrecht (Hogeschool Utrecht). In August 2021 Koen joined the Den Boer group for a 10 month graduation internship. In collaboration with Iris van de Sandt (PhD student), Koen focuses his research on the effect of the hypoxic bone marrow microenvironment on B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (BCP-ALL). Together they try to characterize the alterations that occur in BCP-ALL cells in response to hypoxia and whether these alterations alter the sensitivity to (chemo)therapy and the interaction of leukemic cells with mesenchymal stromal cells.
