For many patients in the Prinses Máxima Center, a hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HCT) can be the current best option for treatment. By gaining more insight into how blood and the immune cells in it regenerate after HCT, it is also hopefully possible to better understand how and when such a treatment can fail. My daily work consists of looking at these blood cells at a single-cell level, which allows us to have a very high-resolution view of the processes these cells are involved in. I love being able to study these cells and see how they behave (after HCT). Ultimately, I hope this knowledge can be translated into new or improved therapies to help the children within (and outside of!) the Máxima.
