To determine what type of cancer a child has, we can take a biopsy of the tumor. We then look under the microscope at how this tumor tissue looks irregular (morphology) and we can also do staining on this biopsy (immunohistochemistry). In addition, we look for DNA changes in the tumor (molecular diagnostics). I do research on these methods of diagnostics. In particular, I focus on DNA changes in neuroblastomas, investigating whether certain DNA changes affect the aggressiveness of the tumor.
