MD / PhD student
Epidemiology of leukemia in children, adolescents and young adults

Emma Geerdes obtained her Bachelor of Medicine at Erasmus University Rotterdam in 2019. She started her Master of Medicine in 2020, for which she did her elective internship at the hematology-oncology department of the Prinses Máxima Center, and her senior clerkship at the Internal Medicine department of the Reinier de Graaf Gasthuis. During her study of Medicine, she volunteered as a research assistant at the gastro-enterology department of Erasmus MC (2018-2021). After having found a profound interest in hematology during her internships, Emma started working at the hematology-oncology group of the department Research & Development of the National Cancer Registry in 2021. This experience further sparked her interest in epidemiological research. Therefore, she started the NIHES Research Master at Erasmus MC after finishing her medical internships. Within this Research Master, she chose the specialization clinical epidemiology, and continued her research at the National Cancer Registry under supervision of dr. Dinmohamed. In 2024, Emma started her PhD at Erasmus University Rotterdam and the Princess Máxima Center for pediatric oncology within the “Childhood Cancer Epidemiology and Outcomes” research group (i.e. Karim-Kos group) and the “Early Drug Development” research group (i.e. Zwaan Group), under supervision of prof. C.M. Zwaan, prof. H.G.P. Raaijmakers, dr. Karim-Kos and dr. Schulpen. Her PhD compromises of two projects, namely the survival disparity between children, adolescents, and young adults with AML, and the long-term effects of the usage of Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors among children, adolescents, and young adults with CML
