Approximately 200 women are diagnosed with cancer during pregnancy each year in the Netherlands. Scientific research showed that oncological treatment is possible during pregnancy. In collaboration with the Advisory Group on Cancer and Pregnancy (AKZ) Netherlands, the CIP team at the Princess Máxima Center provides optimal care for families that are affected. In the CIP outpatient clinic, more than 100 children a year are monitored for medical and (neuro)psychological consequences after exposure to cancer treatment in the womb. Mathilde van Gerwen is involved in the CIP consultation hours as a postdoc. Her current research project focuses on the development on evidence-based guidelines for the best care for this group of patients.
