Communication challenges and opportunities in pediatric oncology medical consultations

Aim and execution:

  1. IDENTIFY study:

Main objectives:

  1. Explore preferences for dashboard feedback of the implementation of pediatric oncology reference curves in children, caregivers and professionals and
  2. evaluate the implementation in clinical practise

Secondary objective:

Explore specific needs and barriers in families with low Dutch language proficiency, families with non-Dutch backgrounds, and families with limited health literacy in both exploration of preferences as well as during implementation

Study design:

This study will have a qualitative design, comprising interviews and focus groups.

Substudy 1: exploration preferences

Endusers of the KLIK PROM portal will be invited to participate in semi-structured interviews (children and caregivers) and focus groups (health care providers (HCPs).

Substudy 2: implementation pilot

Results from substudy 1 will be translated to the updated dashboard. The new dashboards will then be implemented in a selection of HCPs who will be asked to participate in this pilot implementation study. They will be trained by the KLIK team to use the new dashboard. All HCPs in this pilot and children and caregivers will be asked to evaluate the consultation of KLIK with the new dashboard. They will be interviewed about barriers/facilitators for successful implementation of the reference values.

  1. INTERACT study:

Overall aim

To identify intercultural health communication issues for pediatric oncology ethnic minority families, as well as to find indicators for interventions to provide adequate health communication for these families.

Key objectives

  • To identify current language and cultural barriers/facilitators in the communication with ethnic minority families in pediatric oncology from the parents and HCP’s perspective
  • To explore if and how video-reflexive ethnography (VRE) may support awareness and engagement to improve intercultural health communication in pediatric oncology

Study design:

In the first phase, interviews will be conducted with ethnic minority parents and HCPs. In the second phase, parents and HCPs will be asked for permission to make a video recording of one of their outpatient consultations. Then, parents and HCPs will be invited for a video-reflexive session, using their own video-recorded consultation.
