Michel Zwaan, geregistreerd kinderoncoloog sinds 1999, heeft zijn opleiding genoten aan het VU Medisch Centrum in Amsterdam waar hij in 2003 cum laude promoveerde. Zijn promotieonderzoek richtte zich op geneesmiddelenresistentie bij pediatrische acute myeloïde leukemie (AML). Na als specialist in de pediatrische oncologie in Amsterdam te hebben gewerkt, verhuisde hij in 2005 naar het Erasmus MC-Sophia Kinderziekenhuis in Rotterdam waar hij zich richtte op translationeel onderzoek naar myeloïde maligniteiten en vroege geneesmiddelenontwikkeling. In 2008 werd hij benoemd tot universitair hoofddocent en in 2014 tot 'hoogleraar kinderoncologie, met de nadruk op geneesmiddelenontwikkeling' aan het Erasmus MC. Van 2014 tot 2018 stond hij aan het hoofd van de afdeling Kinderoncologie/Hemato-oncologie in Rotterdam. Daarna verhuisde hij naar het Prinses Máxima Centrum in Utrecht, waar hij werd benoemd tot hoofdonderzoeker geneesmiddelenontwikkeling/experimentele therapie en hoofd van het Trial en Datacentrum. Verder is hij voorzitter van de Commissie voor Klinisch Onderzoek van het Prinses Máxima Centrum. Hij is lid van de raad van bestuur van het ITCC en voorzitter van de New Agents Committee van de I-BFM study group.
