NL-4C resource

Harmonized analysis, genomics and clinical data of more than 4,000 children (by 2027), who have given consent and were treated at the Princess Máxima Center, will be collected within a cloud environment to accelerate pediatric cancer research. The Dutch Comprehensive Childhood Cancer Commons, also known is NL-4C, contributes to collecting pediatric cancer data in a world-wide effort to make this accessible for research. By gathering this information, we can better understand the genetic abnormalities underlying different tumor subtypes, obtain new insights into tumor biology, and ultimately advance drug development and improve treatment options

Purpose for research

Upon child and/or parent consent for biobanking, whole-genome (WGS) and RNA sequencing are performed on primary samples (tissue, blood or bone marrow) for research purposes. To support these efforts, the Maxima’s Big Data Core has developed computational analyses for sequenced material that include the detection of somatic variants, including single nucleotide variants (SNVs), insertions and deletions (indels), copy number variations (CNVs) and structural variants (SVs), in tumor samples.

NL-4C portal

NL-4C provides a cloud-based portal that enables data visualization, exploration and building virtual cohorts to understand the clinical and genetic landscape of the Dutch pediatric cancer cohort. The portal is available only for authorized users from trusted organizations. The NL-4C currently hosts:

Users from trusted organizations can:

Explore clinical metadata and run customized queries on the dataset through the NL-4C portal
Explore and visualize analyzed omics data through the NL-4CBioportal

NL-4C data is made available with the goal of accelerating pediatric cancer research and has been carefully curated by the Princess Maxima Center’s Big Data Core facility. To make this data available, standard Biobank and Data Access procedures are followed, including legal agreements. Importantly, the NL-4C initiative complies with data protection and privacy regulations to guarantee that patient information is safely used in the cloud and children’s rights are preserved. By making these data available, NL-4C supports research into pediatric cancer as well as precision medicine programs aimed at providing targeted therapies for individual children.
